Pantone Picks Purple for Color of The Year
Pantone, the worldwide provider of color systems, has chosen ultra violet as its color of the year for 2018. It’s a vivid highlighter shade that Pantone calls “spiritual” and “cosmic,” and hopes it will push “the boundaries of what inspires us.”
Technically speaking, ultra violet is not really a color since it lives outside the visible spectrum. Though a ray of light, we usually seek UV protection in the form of sunscreen. So what was Pantone going for here?
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s executive director. “It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 ultra violet, a blue-based purple… Intuitive ultra violet lights the way to what is yet to come,” she continued.
Although Pantone predicts their color of the year by consulting with marketing directors about global trends, the hue also becomes somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If it wasn’t a trend before, you can now expect a bunch of purple products, especially in fashion, cosmetics and home décor.
Here’s hoping ultra violet inspires a creative 2018!
