How Promotional Is Your Store Décor?
May 19, 2026 by Margaret Sotrop – C-store design and décor is constantly evolving. What used to be simple wayfinding is now becoming more promotional, with signage focused on driving impulse purchases and highlighting key categories throughout the store.
We recently visited a newly opened Circle K location, and it sparked an interesting conversation in our office about promotional signage and customer experience.
The fresh food, fountain and coffee areas were all located on the right side as shoppers walked in. Customers couldn’t miss the signage, warmers, beverage graphics and value messaging. Everything was clearly presented and designed to immediately draw attention to those categories.
Some of us saw the store’s promotional approach as bold and highly intentional, while others appreciated how clearly it directed attention to key categories and encouraged impulse purchases. Either way, the strategy made those destination areas impossible to miss.
It raises an interesting question for retailers: when does promotional décor have the biggest impact on sales and customer engagement?
The best retail environments find the balance between visibility and simplicity. Strong promotional signage should guide shoppers, highlight priority categories and support impulse purchases without creating visual clutter.
What do you think? Is your store décor more subtle, or more promotional by design?
